WHAT DOES A DOULA DO?

“DOULA” IS A GREEK WORD THAT TRANSLATES TO SERVANT.

A doula provides physical, emotional and educational support to the birthing person during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. The doula’s goal should be to ensure you have a safe, memorable and empowering birth experience.

SOME BENEFITS OF HAVING A DOULA INCLUDE:

  • Shortened labor

  • decreased need for analgesia

  • fewer operative (cesarean) deliveries

  • fewer reports of dissatisfaction with the experience of labor

  • decreased risk of baby having a low 5 minute APGAR score

Its important to remember that doulas are not medical professionals so are unable to give medical advice, diagnose conditions, or catch the baby.  However, a doula can positively impact your birth experience.

A DOULA’S OFFERINGS CAN INCLUDE:

  • Comforting touch through massage, counter pressure, or a rebozo

  • Assisting with water therapy (tub or shower)

  • Helping create a calm environment

  • Provide the birthing person with reassurance, praise, and encouragement

  • Suggesting labor techniques such as positioning, breathing, & movement

  • Explain medical procedures before and when they occur

  • Help the partner understand the labor process and keep them involved and informed

Something to keep in mind is humans are social beings. We thrive on human connection and suffer without it.

Having a doula present can lead to an increase in oxytocin in the laboring person- helping to decrease fear and anxiety and increase contractions. (See here on oxytocin’s role in labor and on why you need it flowing!)

The only guarantee with birth is the baby must come out somehow! Thats why I believe its important to have birth “preferences” as oppose to a “plan” so you can remain adaptable to however the birth unfolds. Your doula can assist you in writing your birth preferences and explore how you navigate through the maternity care system and what rights and choices you have. Most importantly your doula will help you be your OWN advocate. They will never speak for you, but will work tirelessly to make sure you are educated, informed and empowered.
